What Exactly Is Humidity - And Why Does It Matter?
Everybody knows what humidity feels like – it’s usually muggy and sticky, making a hot day seem even hotter. But what is humidity, exactly? When TV weather forecasters mention humidity, they generally talk about relative humidity. The amount of water vapor the air can hold relative to its temperature is usually expressed as a percentage. At 100%, that water vapor condenses into liquid.
Warmer air can hold more water vapor than cold air, so humidity is most noticeable in the spring and summer. And when humidity levels are high, the effects can be less than desirable. High humidity can cause mold growth, damage wood and furniture, and make it harder for people to cool off. Air conditioners can remove some humidity from indoor air, but it's not always enough in the balmy summer months. That’s where a dehumidifier comes in!
Dehumidifiers Explained
A dehumidifier removes water vapor from the air by condensing it into liquid. Like an air conditioner, it draws the air over various cold coils. As the air cools, its relative humidity spikes up to 100%, and the moisture condenses into liquid on the surface of the coils. The condensation then drips down into a pan or basin.
Small portable dehumidifiers can be effective for single rooms in a house but usually aren’t capable of dehumidifying a whole home. Their condensate drain pans must also be manually emptied (the unit automatically shuts off when the pan gets full).
On the other hand, a whole-home dehumidifier is typically installed in line with the AC system’s air handler to remove moisture from the air as it’s circulated through the home’s ductwork. The condensation that drips from the coils flows down a pipe and drains outside the home, so homeowners don’t have to worry about emptying the pan themselves.
How to Tell if the House Needs a Dehumidifier
Some thermostats have a built-in humidity sensor called a hygrometer, which allows them to display the home’s relative humidity. Ideally, the humidity in the home should fall between 30% and 60%. If the thermostat or other humidity-sensing device clocks it above that range, it’s probably a good idea to consider installing a dehumidifier.
In homes without humidity sensors, there are a few signs it may be time to install a dehumidifier:
- Condensation on windows or other smooth surfaces.
- Damp carpet or upholstery.
- Warped or cracked wood (door frames, cabinets, furniture, etc.).
- The house feels stuffy, and the skin feels clammy even with the AC running.
- Mold or mildew growth.
- Insect infestations.
- Musty smell.
- Foods get stale or go bad quickly (especially produce and pantry items like chips, crackers, and cereal).
Benefits of Dehumidifiers
High humidity doesn’t just make the home less comfortable; it can pose health risks and damage the home and its furnishings. Installing a whole-house dehumidifier can effectively eliminate the dangers of excessive humidity and provide various benefits.
A dehumidifier can improve indoor air quality by inhibiting mold and bacteria growth. It can help keep away insects and pests that thrive in moist environments. It can protect furniture and the home itself from moisture damage. It can even help boost sleep quality by keeping the home more comfortable during the nighttime hours.
These dehumidifier benefits apply year-round, but they’re most important in the summer since humidity levels are generally higher in warmer weather. So, if homeowners notice any of the signs mentioned above, they should consult with their preferred HVAC company to see if a whole-home dehumidifier installation is right for them!
